Can foster carers change agency when they have a child in their care?

Yes. Foster carer’s can change agency at any time. If you have a child in your care, we would organise a transfer protocol meeting with the team working to support the child.

We also welcome transfers even if you don’t currently have a child in your care.

What is a transfer protocol meeting?

This is a meeting to share information: it includes the responsible local authority, the fostering provider you are transferring from and to and relevant professionals from the team around the child. The purpose is to ensure everyone has an understanding about the child’s needs and any support in place, so consistency can be achieved throughout the transfer process.

Which fostering agency should I choose?

There are lots of different agencies to choose from and there are lots of different factors for each family to consider in terms of what is best for them. We are happy to have a chat and explore this with you so you can make the right decision. Here are the thoughts of some of our foster carers on why they chose Focus.

“With Focus, I know that it doesn’t matter what time of day it is, if I need support someone will always answer the phone. Focus Foster Care is a tight knit, family orientated team and this is not always the way at other agencies and authorities.”

– Rosemary, Focus foster carer

“A strong support network and community gives us a sense of certainty and confidence that we are heading in the right direction with our care. We never feel on our own and are very grateful for the holistic back up we receive!”

– Rob & Jane, Focus foster carers

How do I transfer to your fostering agency?

To get the ball rolling there are many ways you can contact us. Visit our contact page to get in touch today and we will do the rest together.

How long does the transfer process take?

We understand that once foster carers have made the decision to transfer, it is important this is progressed in a timely manner to avoid prolonged periods of uncertainty for any member of the fostering family.

As a guide, we would aim to complete the transfer process within 3 months

Will your agency need to complete a new form F assessment?

To transfer to any fostering provider an updated assessment will need to be presented to the fostering panel. Foster carers have the right to obtain a copy of their original Form F assessment which we would then update in partnership with you

Whilst we won’t compromise on safety, we will look to streamline the process where possible and avoid duplication unnecessarily.

“The Focus team are amazing. They kind of become like extended family. Especially our social worker Fiona.

– Sarah & Ross, Focus foster carers

When do I need to notify my current agency/local authority that I want to transfer?

Ideally as soon as possible, once you have identified the right provider for you to transfer to.

This needs to be in writing to your current provider as a notice of intent to transfer letting them know which agency you have chosen and providing consent for information to be shared. This allows the transfer process to formally begin.

The final part of the transfer process is to submit your 28 days notice of resignation, in writing to your current provider. The timing of this will be discussed with your assessing social worker and based on what is right for your family’s circumstances.

Will my fostering allowance change if I already have a child in placement?

When transferring with an existing child in your care, we would either match your current allowances or move you on to our fostering allowances based on whichever is higher.

Any future children you care for, would be paid in line with Focus Foster Care’s allowances.

We are currently offering a £1000 welcome bonus to all transferring foster carers.

Transfer to Focus Foster care and receive a £1000 welcome gift once approved by our fostering panel.
