The Importance of Fostering Communities – Foster Care Fortnight 2022
Every May, The Fostering Network run their annual fostering awareness campaign and each year
there is a different theme. This year, the theme is fostering communities. It takes more than one
person to help a child in need of foster care. In fact, fostering communities are needed to make sure
children, their birth families and their foster carers all get the support they need. Here at Focus
Foster Care, we have a tight-knit community of foster carers and our team here at our independent
fostering agency. We believe in the life-changing power of foster care and work hard as an agency to
support everyone in our community.
Focus Foster Care is an independent fostering agency with a small yet dedicated team. Here on our
blog we have posts all about each member of our team, it is important to us that all of our foster
carers and enquiring foster carers can get to know the people behind the Focus Foster Care name.
Embracing the lives of children and young people is at the centre of everything we do, and it
wouldn’t be possible without our hardworking foster carers.
We currently have nine fostering families registered with our agency. Our dedicated foster carers
look after children from a range of family backgrounds, with various needs and in different kinds of
fostering placements. Like the children we look after, our fostering community is full of people from
different walks of life. A diverse fostering community is essential to meet the different needs of
children and young people. Living with a foster family can be an anxious time for children, by
growing a diverse team of foster carers, we are able to place children in the best possible home for
their specific circumstances.
The children of foster carers also play an important role in our fostering community. A foster carer’s
birth children can help children to settle into their new home and make them feel welcome and at
ease by sharing their toys, introducing them to their friends and so on. We have several foster carers
who are looking after children in need alongside their birth children.
Whilst we may have a whole community working hard to give looked after children the best life
possible, fostering can be challenging, and some placements can have more ups and downs than
others. To help our foster carers to meet people in a similar situation to themselves, we host ‘foster
family meet ups’ a few times a year. In the past we have hosted fun days out at Kingsbury Water
Park, Sandwell Valley Country Park and Hatton Country World. Unfortunately, the pandemic
interrupted these meet ups , but we hope these will become regular again moving forward.
At Focus Foster Care, we are passionate about helping our local community. As well as providing
children with exceptional foster care, we also sponsor local events and children’s clubs. We have
been sponsoring Copsewood Rangers Under 14’s since 2015 and recently on 13th May, we sponsored
the Four Oaks primary school PTA Spring Ball.
Our foster carers are extremely generous in sharing their knowledge to help grow our fostering
community, so together we can help even more children in need. One of our fostering couples have
been looking after children for over forty years, they have shared their wisdom and advice in a
previous blog post. Even our newest foster carers have happily shared their experience of fostering
so far, you can read Natalie’s story and Lindsay’s story here on our website. As our community
grows, we will continue to offer the same level of support to all our foster carers and the children
that they look after.
Statistics show that a child comes into the care system every 20minutes. Unfortunately, the number
of children needing foster care continues to rise and this is why fostering communities are so
